TRICK TAKING GAMES

Many popular card games, referred to as trick taking games, are based on a core set of rules which they all share in common. Spades, Hearts and Euchre are some of the most well known ones. Although these core rules are tweaked and modified to fit each individual game the concepts are basically the same.

Jax relies on this same core of rules so it is important that every player understand these rules. Please note that many of the concepts outlined below contain details unique to the game of Jax.

    TRICK
  • To properly understand what a trick is you must understand that during these games players may play only one card at a time and only when it is their turn. When all players at the table have played a card this is called a trick.
  • Typically, a person is chosen to play the first card in every trick. Then play continues in a clockwise fashion until all have played a card.
  • Each player must play a card of the same suit that was led if they are able.
    WHO GOES FIRST?
  • For the first trick the high bidder goes first. For each subsequent trick whoever played the highest ranking card will lead the next trick.
    TAKING A TRICK
  • Whichever player plays the highest ranking card in any trick gets to take the trick. This just means that they get to collect all of the cards played in that trick and set them aside as their own.
    TRUMP
  • Trump is a suit in which any card of that suit is higher in rank than all the cards of every other suit.

†Some exceptions to this rule are outlined in the Jax! rule set
