TIPS AND STRATEGIES

There are many different strategies that can be employed to help you win at the game of Jax! Here are a few to get you started.

IMPORTANT NOTE: In order to avoid confusion it is highly advisable that you become familiar with the game mechanics before reading this section.

    BIDDING
  1. A large part of the game's strategy resides in mastering the bidding process.

  2. Do not base your bid on the number of tricks that only you can take. Although you don't know how many tricks your partner will be able to take you must consider that they will take some.

  3. The high bidder has a considerable advantage in that he gets to choose whatever suit he wishes to be trump. Because of this, it can sometimes be easier to take a high number of tricks as the high bidder than a lower number of tricks if you're not the high bidder.

  4. Because there are only 13 possible tricks 7 is the exact middle, or neutral ground. Why? Out of 13 possible tricks if 7 are taken this leaves only 6 tricks left. Therefore, each team has to get 7 tricks to prevent the other team from winning. Use this knowledge to your advantage when making a bid. Anything below 7 tricks is quite simple to get. Anything above 7 tricks gets progressively harder. At 7, the high bidder will almost always win.

  5. Force your opponent onto dangerous ground by making the highest bid you can. If you start your bid out at 7 or 8 your opponent will be forced to either make a higher and more difficult to achieve bid or pass and allow you to be the high bidder with a relatively easy to achieve bid.

  6. Be careful about outbidding your partner. If you think your partner has a better hand than you you should pass and let them duke it out with other team. On the other hand, you may want to outbid your teammate if you think their bid was too low or you want them to know you have a good hand.

  7. Trapping is an advanced and dangerous strategy but can be very effective if used properly and at the appropriate time. Trapping is when you have a very good hand but get your opponent to be the high bidder in the hopes of setting them. Although very risky it can yield more points in the end.

    FREEZING
  1. If you cannot win a trick right out, freezing it can give your team an extra opportunity to win. It also invalidates your opponents' best cards making it harder for them to win.

  2. Keep a close eye on which clone suit cards you have and when you can play them. Hang on to them as long as possible to give yourself more opportunities to freeze tricks.

  3. If you're worried about your high ranking cards from being frozen try to lead with the clone suit to draw these cards out of the other players' hands.

  4. Be careful about freezing the trick if your partner has not played their hand yet.

  5. Freezing the last hand(s) is an excellent way of preventing the high bidder's team from getting the tricks they need.

    JACK THE RIPPER
  1. Use Jack the Ripper to take tricks you otherwise could not have won

  2. "The Sacrifice" is when you intentionally play Jack the Ripper even though you or your teammate has played the highest ranking card. You sacrifice the trick but take control of who leads the next trick.

  3. To get rid of Jack the Ripper without having it affect game play simply play it after someone else freezes the trick.
